Generally, there are four different types of paint finishes and knowing your paint type will indicate how easily dirt will come off, as well as your cleaning methods.
• Baked Enamels can withstand heavy-duty cleaners and degreasers and should be scrubbed with mild abrasive materials.
• General-Purpose Enamels need a neutral cleaning solution and should be scrubbed with a non-abrasive material.
• Flat Latex paints chip easily so they require a mild detergent and a scrub with minimal force applied.
• Exterior Oil-based or Latex paints must only be scrubbed with a mild detergent and rinsed with a garden hose.
2. Remove all Dirt
Brush away loose dirt and cobwebs, as loose dirt may smudge and leave marks. Begin at the top of the wall and continue top to bottom from one side to the other. Starting from the top and working your way down prevents any dirt from falling onto already cleaned areas.
3. Mix Your Cleaning Solution
Fill your bucket approximately half full with warm water and mix in your cleaning solution. Be careful not to add to much soap as it may cause the walls to stick dirt.
4. Scrub Your Walls
Dampen a small portion of your sponge in the bucket and spread the solution onto the wall. Always begin at the top and work your way to the bottom. Be sure to squeeze out excess water often and blot the surface to lift any further dirt.
5. Dry the Wall
Dry the wall using a towel and you are finished. Congratulations.
